Masked

No clue where I found these, but they are great, here is another recipe for a home made mask, this one is for the eyes. Again, check for allergic reaction before you apply anything to your face. Since the eye area is sensitive, this might be a great mask to try with a friend.

2tsp. peeled, grated organic cucumber
1tsp. powdered milk

Mix into a paste, apply to closed eyes on the entire area, leave on for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Oily Skin All Purpose Mask:
The recipe is a variation on the avocado mask specifically for dry skin. As always check and make sure you have no allergic reactions to any of the ingredients before applying mask to your face.

1/2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1 tsp. dry black tea
1 tsp. clover honey
1 egg white
1/2 cup fresh strawberries
2oz. row acorn squash or pumpkin

Mash all ingredients, apply to face for 10-15 minutes, rinse off with warm water, pat dry.

Dry Skin All Purpose Mask:
A great recipe for a face mask, as always, make sure you are not allergic to any ingredients before you apply the mask on your face.

1/2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1 tsp. dry black tea

1/2 avocado
1 slice fresh peach

Mash and blend all ingredients and apply mask evenly on face. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and rinse with warm water and cloth.

Thanksgiving Traditions

While browsing the internet for something completely off-topic, I came across a website containing recipes for some traditional Native American food. With Thanksgiving around the corner I thought this might be a great source to share... so here it is: Native American Recipes

A nice change from the usual mashed potatoes and gravy, which I still will be serving anyway but this year accompanied by corn pudding and fry bread.

Friends, Beer, Chemistry - Sounds Like a Party!

Ever find yourself in this situation?  Food is all done and out on the buffet table, the music is playing, the grill is hot, friends are ringing the door bell and oh! you forgot to chill the beverages.  Not to worry, science to the rescue. My favorite TV personalities, the Mythbusters, have demonstrated that getting beer to it's perfect drinking temperature takes only 5 minutes. Yes, 5 minutes. How? you ask...

...by adding a mixture of salt & water to the ice in your cooler. The salt melts the ice and lowers the waters freezing point resulting in water that is as much as 10F colder almost instantly.  Use a generous amount of salt for large coolers, just pour it on. Room temperature beverages will chill to perfection in 5 minutes.

Cheers!

Rolling Pizza Stones

Had this discussion with a friend the other night; how do you clean a pizza stone? Apparently it's easy to ruin one by washing it with soap. The stone I own, did not come with cleaning instructions, so I did some research [as mine is still on the counter top with day old crust and cheese stuck to it] and this is what I found unanimous and universal for cleaning it:

- Use a kitchen scraper to get rid of the stuck on pieces.
- Wipe with a damp [water only] sponge or cloth.
- Submerge in warm, clean water, again - no soap! Soak for 20 minutes to completely saturate the porous ceramic surface.
- Air dry overnight.

So know we all know.

Get Your Spice Girls!

As far as food is concerned there is nothing worse than a bland dinner at the end of a long day, but  cooking while tired [and hungry] can be just as thrilling, the remedy: stocking up on spice-mixes to quickly flavor your meals, you can pick them up at any supermarket. My fave: Jamaican Curry Mix, Masala Mix, Wasabi Powder and Steak Seasoning. Throwing together a few ingredients of your choice and seasoning the hell out of it with the mixes results in a quick, scrumptious meal. So for those days when you want to eat well at home and skip the takeout menu try some quick stir-fry recipes:

Combine chopped veggies and boiled noodles in a wok, on medium heat.  Add a generous mix of seasoning, mix well and serve.

I use frozen pre-chopped veggies [zero prep work] and wheat pasta noodles, I boil those while I'm setting the table. Fastest meal I cooked took 5 minutes!

A Healthy Lunch That Satisfies the Naughty Side

There is too much bread and carbs in our lives, because they taste soooo good, but they are soooo bad in large quantities. Today I altered a basic recipe into a healthier one. So... My Cheese Tortellini & Broccoli Alfredo. Serves two.
1 serving of cheese tortellini
2 cups of fresh broccoli
1/2 serving of alfredo sauce
pinch or two of sea salt

Follow the serving size portions on your packaging

Boil the tortellini as usual, chop the broccoli into quarter coin size and steam for 2 minutes. Heat the sauce on low for 2 minutes in a wide pan, combine all ingredients in the pan used to heat up the sauce, stir for another minute until everything is evenly coated, add sea salt and serve.

The split between the servings makes all the difference in the amount of calories and carbs your take in while satisfying that craving for all things fattening. The tortellini and broccoli are just slightly coated with the sauce but still have that same great taste.

Fun Way to Eat Those Healthy Carrots.

My fiancee was hungry and I had nothing in my fridge except for carrots. So I came up with this quick recipe for a fun breakfast or snack.

Serves 2

You'll need: two medium carrots, salt, bread crumbs, a bit of onion, one egg, olive oil.

Clean, peel and shred the carrots. Chop the onion. Mix together in a bowl, add salt, add egg. Mix. Preheat one table spoon of olive oil on a frying pan. When hot, place small "clump" of carrot batter onto the pan. Wait approx a minute, then flip and fry the other side. Should take about 2 minutes. Serve warm! Yum!

Vegetable Briyani

This is a Wholefoods Recipe, I found it on their website. ENJOY!

Serves 6 to 8

Top the finished biryani with a fragrant mix of sliced jalapeños, tomato wedges and chopped cilantro, if you like.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon canola oil
2 to 3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 large red onion, cut into small wedges
1 (2-inch) piece ginger, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped roasted cashews, divided
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt
1 tablespoon curry powder
5 cups (1 1/2-inch) chunks fresh vegetables such as cauliflower, carrots or green beans
2/3 cup water
1 cup frozen peas
1 cup basmati rice, rinsed until water runs clear then drained

Method

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Heat oil in a large ovenproof pot over medium high heat. Add garlic, onion, ginger, half of the cashews, salt and pepper and cook, stirring often and adding a splash of water when the mixture sticks to the pot, until deep golden brown and soft, about 15 minutes. Add yogurt and curry powder and cook until thickened, 2 to 3 minutes more. Stir in vegetables, water, salt and pepper, cover and simmer until vegetables are tender on the outside but not cooked through, about 5 minutes. Remove pot from heat and stir in frozen peas.

Meanwhile, bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil. Add rice and simmer for 5 minutes; drain well. Arrange rice over vegetables in pot, cover pot with foil then a tight-fitting lid and bake until rice and vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Uncover, carefully transfer contents of pot to a large bowl and toss together gently. Spoon into bowls and serve garnished with remaining cashews.

Another Find From VegCooking.com!

Get creative with these crêpes and fill them with your favorite jellies, sauces, chopped fruits, syrup, or sugar. These can be served as breakfast or dessert. Delicious Crêpes

1/2 cup unbleached white flour
1/2 cup whole wheat pastry
flour
1/4 cup soy flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3 cups soy milk

  • Mix the dry ingredients and make a well in the middle. Pour in the soy milk and combine. The batter should be very thin.
  • Heat a 10-inch non-stick crêpe pan over moderate heat, and spray with non-stick spray. Pour in about 1/4 cup of the batter, tilting the pan so that the batter covers the bottom with a thin coating.
  • Cook until it is browned from underneath and starts to pull away from the edge of the pan. Carefully flip it over and brown on the other side. Serve hot.
